Derek 'Tommo' Thompson is a true icon of the racing world. Often called “the voice of horse racing,” his distinctive and energetic commentary has become synonymous with the sport. Known just as much for his quick wit as his unmistakable voice, Tommo has made generations of racegoers smile with classic one-liners like: “It's a photo! That's one for the judge!”, “Are you well? I thought you were!”, and “It's a man, actually, Derek!”
Tommo's career began unexpectedly at the age of 15 when his father handed him the microphone mid-race at a point-to-point — a moment that set the stage for a lifetime in racing. At just 22, he became the youngest-ever Grand National commentator, famously calling Red Rum's first victory. Over the years, he's voiced the triumphs of legendary horses like Frankel in 2010 and Dubai Millennium in 2000.
